Read Across America Week
School No. 51 observes Read Across America Week annually by commemorating some of Dr. Seuss’ wonderful books. This nationwide event is designed to promote literacy among young children. During this celebration, our students participate in various activities that foster cognitive, language, and social and emotional development. Our celebration begins with a visit from the Cat in the Hat. Students create birthday cards for Dr. Seuss in the classroom and later display them on the windows facing the garden. Parents participate in their children’s learning by helping their child create birthday cards for Dr. Seuss at home. The projects are later displayed throughout the school. Students wear green in honor of Dr. Seuss’ book Green Eggs and Ham. Staff members and students wear silly socks and crazy hats in honor of Dr. Seuss’ books Fox in Socks and The Cat in the Hat. Our PTO participates in the event by hosting their annual Scholastic Book Fair. Our school welcomes guest readers that include parents, community helpers and Elizabeth Board of Education members. We end the weeklong celebration by wearing pajamas for Reading Under the Stars. Books are read using flashlights as shooting stars fly over student’s heads. This event is held as an opportunity to gather the parents, students and teachers in an environment which fosters a love of reading.
